FAQs

How can I tell if I should attend therapy?
The common misconception is that therapy is for people who are "sick" or "crazy". In reality, therapy is for anyone who feels stuck. You do not have to be on medication or have a diagnosis. If you are unsure how to resolve a very important problem in your life, therapy can help. If you want to improve your relationship but nothing seems to be working, therapy can help. If you simply want to vent to someone who will listen and not judge you, a therapist is that person. Treatment issues range from ordinary to severe and regardless of where you fall on that spectrum, give therapy a try.

I've decided to come to therapy. What should I expect?
You and I will talk over the phone for 15-30 minutes to discuss your issue and goals for therapy. We will set up a time and date for our virtual session. The intake paperwork will be sent to you beforehand to be completed prior to the appointment. To begin, we will talk about what brings you to therapy. I like my clients to lead the way but I will also ask questions to gather information and better understand what you are dealing with.

What will I get out of therapy?
My hope is that you will leave each therapy session a little more hopeful than when you walked in and feeling empowered to get through each day. At the end of treatment you will have learned more about yourself, the people around you, and coping skills for whatever you face in life. Other benefits include:
- a stronger marriage
- better communication skills
- practical skills for handling anger, grief, depression, etc.
- additional resources specific to your treatment issue
- better understanding of yourself and how you think about your life

What if I feel like therapy is not working?
Therapy is not for everyone and I am not the right therapist for every client. I believe in being transparent and my hope is to establish a comfortable rapport with my clients. If there is an incorrect fit, I will provide you with a referral for other therapists who are equally qualified to help you.

Can I call you in case of an emergency or crisis?
All of my clients are instructed to call 911 and/or proceed to the nearest hospital in the event of an emergency. I am available by phone and e-mail during business hours. All messages will be responded to within 24 hours.

What about privacy?
Client information will be kept completely confidential, regardless of age. No details about clients and/or information shared within a session will be disclosed without written consent from the client. However, there are three situations in which I will have to fulfill my legal duties as a mandated reporter:

1. Threat of harm to one's self and/or another person;
2. Cases of suspected and/or demonstrated elder abuse; and
3. Cases of suspected and/or demonstrated child abuse.

I will make every effort to inform clients of my duty to act should any of these situations arise yet a guarantee cannot be made about prior notification if I feel I need to report suspected harm
